Peeping Toms...have you ever thought about them? Yes, they are around! They have been in the news quite a bit. Whereabouts did the name "Peeping Tom" come from anyhow? Was "Tom" the first man ever to be recorded in history to have been charged with illegal voyeurism?
Well, believe it or not, the name actually goes all the way back to the year of 1067! There was a lady named "Lady Godiva". She was the wife of the Earl of Mercia from England. He was going to administer oppressive taxation on the townsfolk.
She asked him to lower the taxes, and he said that there was only one way he would do so. He told her he'd do it if she would ride through the market square completely nude with nothing to cover herself but her long hair. She told the townspeople that she would do this for them and had asked them if they would not look at her as she did.
Well, everyone went inside out of pure respect for her, except for a tailor who's name was you got it, Tom! He couldn't help himself but to look. He bored a hole in his shutters to watch her go by. The legend states that he therefore went blind. Her husband did accommodate their agreement, and the taxes were lowered. No such thing in this day and age, eh? Can you imagine if we still handled business in such a manner?
I know, it all sounds believable until that very last statement about going blind! What an interesting history on the origin of the name, though!
